The media in today’s society is a very powerful thing. It has the ability to influence people’s choices, decisions, and override their common sense and logic. It has the ability to bring joy to people, or depict so much death and destruction it becomes depressing to only see that side of the world. It has the opportunity to raise the youth of the world in a way where they can come together and change it, or raise them in a way that they will continue to repeat history in destroying it.
Movie fans around the country have had their long-needed question answered recently: the 2010 MTV Movie Awards host is Aziz Ansari. The Parks and Recreation star will be hosting the awards show on June 6th, honing in on his stand-up comedy throughout the night. With a fair amount of acting under his belt, in television shows and movies such as Scrubs, Reno 911, and his own show on MTV, Human Giant; The Rocker, and I Love You, Man; and his hilarious comedy, he seems to be the perfect choice for the host. Making household appearances to millions of fans every week on Parks and Recreation, hosting the awards show also allows for him to become more well-known. His hosting will bring numerous fans to their television sets to watch, and new faces who have yet to find out how funny he really is.
 Kellan Lutz and Kola Despite PETA’s sometimes controversial campaigns and many acronyms that poke fun, replacing People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals with other words that have the same lettering, they do have a good message. And supporting this message is Twilight star Kellan Lutz. Taking a stance with his adopted dog Kola, Lutz appears on posters which state “Buying Animals is Killing Animals” and “Adopt, Don’t Buy”. In an interview with PETA, Lutz states “There are surprisingly so many animals in these animal shelters. It’s sad, and knowing that they get euthanized…and there’s a lot you can do…spay or neuter your pets so that doesn’t happen.” In the interview, he also explains his experience after finding Kola curled up in the back of a cage at an animal shelter. Twilight co-star Christian Serratos has also taken a part in PETA, who posed a few months ago for PETA’s campaign “I’d Rather Go Naked than Wear Fur”. Many rumors swirl around PETA and what their real intentions are, but the Twilight stars intentions are definitely positive, wanting to support the adoption of animals rather than purchase them from breeders or pet stores. Purchasing them in the latter way described is often supporting puppy mills in which the animals are abused and not taken care of well at all. Many animals that come from breeders, puppy mills, etc. end up filling up animal shelters, and whether they are no-kill shelters or not doesn’t matter- because the shelters are still filling up and animals everywhere are suffering because of it.  Christian Serratos posing for PETA's campaign When a 7.0 earthquake struck Haiti on January 12, the world witnessed the devastation it caused. It wasn’t long for relief efforts to organize and begin doing everything they could to save the lives of as many people they could, help the wounded, and comfort anyone and everyone. Over 50 aftershocks have been measured by the United States Geological Society; the highest was of a 5.9 magnitude. It is estimated that near or over 200,000 people have died in this tragic disaster, and thousands more are wounded and in need of food, water, and medical attention.
George Clooney and Haitian-born rapper Wyclef Jean jumped on organizing a two-hour telethon which premiered on January 22. It was shown on multiple channels on TV, and streamed live online. Musicians were featured singing songs with encouraging lyrics, and actors told the stories of Haitian people while urging viewers to donate money. Over 60 million dollars is said to have been raised, and was spread amongst various relief organizations. The songs which were featured on last Friday’s telethon were also digitally released to continue encouraging donations be made, and the all proceeds will be donated to relief efforts as well. The album features 20 tracks by artists such as Coldplay, Beyonce, Taylor Swift, John Legend, Jennifer Hudson, and other great artists. The album saw over 150,000 downloads over the weekend, and has debuted at number 1 on the Billboard 200. This makes it the first album to reach that spot through only a digital-release.
